The Beginning
Greetings! My name is Alex and I am 27 years old and live in Philadelphia.
After five years of working my way up the corporate ladder and saving for a down payment on my first home, I found myself reassessing my life goals. Did I really want to scrape up every last dollar I had and drop it into a piece of real estate? Was it really a good idea have a 30 year mortgage hanging over my head?
Another thing weighing on my mind was that I have friends scattered all over the country, some of whom I have not seen in years. A few of these friends have visited me in Philadelphia, but I have never visited them. I knew I would not have the time and money to see them if I embarked on the journey of home ownership. I had some serious thinking to do.
So I made a decision: take the money I had saved for a home and use it to travel. I will use it to see old friends and new places. At this point in my life this seems like a much more worthwhile investment. Homes will always be there for purchase, but the ability to travel by myself on a moment's notice will not.
I am fortunate enough to work for an employer that provides me with a generous amount of days off per year. I have 28 vacation days remaining in the year 2013. My goal is to use as many of these days as possible to travel. That means I better not get sick.
Wherever I am I will make and effort to immerse myself in the fabric of that place to truly appreciate what makes it unique. Some journeys will be close to home, others will take me to the opposite side of the world. I will use this blog to document and pay tribute to the people and places that I encounter during my days off.
So for the next year I will be part time traveler, still holding down the 9 to 5 job, but making the most of my time off. Check back regularly as I update my progress
